Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. The enormous collection of drawings, prints, paintings, sculptures, design and fashion is stored in the adjacent Depot.

Closed for renovation

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen temporarily closed its doors in 2019. The monumental museum building was in such a bad state that only an immense renovation can provide a solution. It is expected to take ten years and open in 2029 a building that is ready for the future and next generations.

About Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is one of the oldest museums in the Netherlands. In 1849, the lawyer Boijmans bequeathed his art collection to the city of Rotterdam. With the acquisition of the Van Beuningen collection in 1958, the name of the museum was expanded. In 1935, the current museum building was opened, a monumental building that was specially built around the collection by city architect Van der Steur. The stately appearance of red brick includes intimate cabinets and spacious salons where art can be viewed in daylight.

Depot is open

The museum has a large collection of paintings, sculptures, utensils, design and fashion. The collection of drawings and prints is one of the best in the world. Dutch and European masterpieces provide an overview from the early Middle Ages to the 21st century. From Bosch, Rembrandt and Van Gogh to Dalí and Dutch Design. Since 2020, the entire museum collection has been stored in Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen . The first museum depot that is accessible to the public. The Depot, in an iconic mirrored building, is located next to the museum and is open to visitors six days a week.
