Rotterdam art institution

Brutus is a Rotterdam art institution in the raw setting of a developing port area. It is a unique initiative born from a passion for art. A place that can best be translated as an artist-driven playground. Work by big names from international art alternates with talent yet to be discovered. Brutus likes to give makers carte blanche to experiment and show their vision. All possible art and culture disciplines are presented: from sculpture to performance, from drawing to video. Art that can sometimes be quite confrontational, and at the same time stimulating. Work that reflects the changing zeitgeist and ideas that inspire for the future.

A large location with a total of 6000m2 of exhibition space. The former harbour complex houses, in addition to various large and small industrial spaces, the workshop and storage of Atelier Van Lieshout and a (freely accessible) sculpture garden: Brutus Garden.

In this area, where Joep van Lieshout once settled with his studio in the 1980s, van Lieshout's dream of creating more space for art took root. First by securing more and more space in the area for art with AVL Mundo and since 2022 Brutus has also been added as a programming art institution. But there are even bigger plans for the future. In collaboration with PowerHouse Company and Red Company, work is being done towards new construction, which will be realized in a few years at the current location on the Keileweg. A unique habitat where people can live, work, reside and create and with plenty of space for all forms of contemporary art.
