WereldMuseum brings together new perspectives and stories with Crafting New Narratives
In Kruispunt Rotterdam at the WereldMuseum, objects from the collection are approached from the lens of craftsmanship. From 1 March, the exhibition will expand to include works by by Amy Suo Wu, Hatutamelen, Chequita Nahar and Funda Baysal in the brand new room Crafting New Narratives.
The four new works by contemporary artists provide new perspectives and stories, make connections between past and present and show how they are intertwined. The objects at Kruispunt Rotterdam cross regions and time, but come together in the creativity, innovation and beauty of making.
The addition of new artworks and installations further enriches this story. The works explore themes of identity, heritage, migration and craft traditions in innovative ways, inviting visitors to reflect on how stories are formed, shared and reinterpreted over time.
The artists in Crafting New Narratives each in their own way bring together craft and contemporary art to tell stories deeply rooted in cultural heritage and personal history. Amy Suo Wu uses textiles and craft techniques as a symbolic form of healing and recovery from intergenerational trauma, while Hatutamelen revalues Moluccan carvings by giving traditional motifs a contemporary interpretation. Chequita Nahar incorporates Surinamese making traditions into her jewellery and art objects, with storytelling playing an essential role. Funda Baysal combines ceramics with digital techniques to make movements and sounds tangible, Together, these artists show how creativity is a powerful tool for preserving, transforming and giving new meaning to stories.
