Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum: From festival to the penis cactus
Trompenburg Gardens & Arboretum is a beautiful botanical garden with a large collection of trees, shrubs, perennials, bulbs and tubers. The garden covers 8 hectares and is located in Kralingen. It was first laid out about 200 years ago. Trompenburg is of great value in terms of biodiversity and natural history. It has also been a registered museum, Rotterdam Monument and thus the green museum of Rotterdam for several years. At the moment, everything is starting to grow and bloom again and there are many events. For instance, spring will soon be celebrated extensively, the penis cactus will be on display and large plant and cactus markets are coming up.
The Spring Festival on Sunday 14 April
Spring is about to start and this will be celebrated at Trompenburg with a garden festival for young and old. The theme is growing and blooming. For children, there is plenty to do in the botanical garden and they can even get a real garden team diploma after completing a course. The terraces and food trucks will also be open again for a coffee, drink or snack.
Sale of unusual annual plants on Sunday 28 April
The Trompenburg Seed Society consists of dedicated green professional women. In February, they start growing more than 60 different special annual plants. This results in a wonderfully colourful assortment. Every year, the society selects new and remarkable plant varieties. The young plants are transplanted with precision and dexterity. On 28 April, anyone can buy these annual plants at Trompenburg. Prices start at €1.75 per plant.
The Plant Market on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May
Rotterdam's largest plant market takes place during the first weekend of May. In the green cosy setting of Trompenburg, you will find specialised growers offering their beautiful and often organic plants. Besides plants, there are also stalls with garden tools, decoration, honey and gift items. Expert growers are happy to give advice on choosing the right plants for the garden and how to maintain them.
Cactus weekend on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June
A tantalising weekend all about cacti and related plants such as carnivorous plants. These fascinating plants have a unique and enchanting appearance. At a mini market, you can meet special specimens, buy fun gift items and get tips on how to keep cacti healthy and happy. During workshops, everyone can learn more about (cutting) cacti and interesting facts will be shared. Also don't miss the exhibition of the Trichocereus Breidgesii Monstrose (the penile cactus)!
