Adam Rouhana shows the beauty and complexity of life in Palestine
Adam Rouhana is a Palestinian-American artist and photographer who commutes between Jerusalem and London for his work. He visits his family in Palestine every year. The daily life he experiences here does not match the image Rouhana sees in Western media. From 21 December, the Kunsthal will show his raw but also dreamy images that show the beauty and complexity of life in Palestine. At the same time, he questions the role of photojournalism.
For the past three years, Rouhana has been recording local life in historic Palestine, in cities such as Jerusalem, Haifa, Akka, Hebron, Nablus and Bethlehem. His work offers a varied and intimate picture of everyday life. It shows a world where children play and swim, and friends and families gather for a picnic or at the hairdresser's. At the same time, images of soldiers, checkpoints and surveillance cameras confront the viewer with the harsh reality of the occupation.
In a subtle colour palette and with natural light, the photographer captures Palestinians as authentic, proud and full of joy. Amid recurring elements such as olive trees, poppies and watermelons - symbols of Palestinian resistance that also characterise the landscape and local culture - Rouhana invites the viewer into the lives of Palestinians, who continue their daily activities despite the occupation.
