We have always been here

Together we learn the history lesson we never had: about the rich heritage of queer Muslims and celebrate the fact that we have always been and always will be.

Together with the Muslim and queer community, Maas organizes the talk show We Have Always Been Here, a celebration of being Muslim and queer. Led by host Nora Akachar, we investigate what it means to be queer and Muslim in the Netherlands. How do you find safety and trust? And where does the intolerance towards queers from Islam and vice versa come from? Has it always been like this?

The program starts with a welcome and introduction by Nora, followed by a musical performance by Sophia Habib and an in-depth conversation with someone from the community and the audience: which battles are being fought? And what is there to celebrate? During the break you can enjoy a çai/chay/sai buffet with sweet treats from Morocco and Turkey, provided by Bakkerij Fes. Afterwards there is a lecture on the history of queer Muslims in Islam by Dino Suhonic. The day ends with a dance performance and drinks in the foyer.
