Vrijheidscollege Jip van der Toorn

How can you protest with an image? Cartoonist Jip van der Toorn talks about this in her Freedom Lecture.

It is 80 years ago that the Netherlands was liberated and the Second World War officially ended here. And yet, freedom is at stake in many places around the world. It is and remains important to think about the value of freedom and how we can safeguard it. That is why Freedom Lectures are given throughout the country, from festivals to community centres to libraries. Jip van der Toorn, one of the Netherlands' most famous cartoonists, is visiting us.

In her Freedom Lecture, Jip talks about protesting in images and shares why it is so important to continue to speak out for the issues that are close to your heart. Come along and get yourself thinking through Jip's words and images.

Jip van den Toorn (1993) is one of the Netherlands' best-known cartoonists. In her book Crisis (2022) and her image columns for, among others, de Volkskrant, she shares her view on current affairs. She has won several awards for her work, including the Inktspot Award for the best political cartoon of the year. She worked for many years as an editor for the satirical program Dit was het nieuws, participated in Wie is de Mol? and is a regular guest on talk shows.
