Vogels - Internationaal Theater Amsterdam / Alize Zandwijk
Birds by Canadian-Lebanese writer Wajdi Mouawad is a family drama set amid the long-standing tensions between Palestine and Israel and their far-reaching consequences.
Eitan, a Jewish student in New York, falls in love with the Arab Wahida but encounters the unwavering attitude of his father who does not want to allow 'the enemy' into his family. Eitan goes in search of his roots in Israel and ends up in hospital after a bomb attack. The family members gather around the hospital bed and uncover a long-hidden secret that shakes all assumptions about identity and enmity.
Alize Zandwijk introduced Mouawad's work in the Netherlands. At the Ro Theater, where she was artistic director from 2006 to 2016, she directed four of his plays, including Branden. War and identity are also central in Vogels, which she previously directed at Theater Bremen. The audience is drawn into an exciting quest that ultimately forces all characters to examine their prejudices and origins. Zandwijk turns Vogels into a musical and poetic performance in which the actors bring the complex characters to life in an inimitable way.
Vogels was selected for the Dutch Theater Festival in 2023 and Yahya Gaier was nominated for the Arlecchino 2023.
