Unstable Grounds – Première- Peter Somuah (North Sea Round Town) North Sea Round Town

As Artist in Focus 2025 of North Sea Round Town festival, trumpeter and composer Peter Somuah will be given the space to deepen his artistic vision, experiment and open up new worlds. Central to this trajectory is the premiere of Unstable Grounds on 3 July in the Wester Theater, a hidden gem in the heart of Rotterdam.

Unstable Grounds is a provocative and compelling multidisciplinary performance that brings together music, dance and visual art in a powerful reflection on the enduring influence of colonization in Africa. Somuah explores how this legacy continues to resonate in education, religion and social structures today – often in ways that are not immediately apparent. “People think colonialism is something from the past,” says Somuah. “But the effects are still there, mentally and socially. It has shaped how we see ourselves, and how others see us.”

With this project, Somuah wants to create awareness – not through words, but through the language of music, rhythm and movement. Together with an (inter)national cast of performers with African, South American and British roots – Cassie Kinoshi, Ildo Nandja, Dane Paris and Revé Terborg – he invites the audience to become part of an experience that unfolds layer by layer. Unstable Grounds is not a traditional performance, but a sensory journey through sound, body and image, in which you are confronted with history, identity and the power of collective imagination.
