The Straight Story 1999

In 1999, David Lynch surprised friend and foe with this endearingly simple yet passionate true story about an elderly man who travels hundreds of miles by lawn mower to visit his brother.

David Lynch, maker of some of the most disturbing and bizarre films in recent cinema history such as Blue Velvet, astonished friend and foe in 1999 with this endearingly simple yet passionate true story about an elderly man who travels hundreds of miles by lawn mower to visit his brother.

The Straight Story is based on the true story of Alvin Straight. When the elderly man hears in 1994 that his brother – whom he has not spoken to in a long time – has suffered a stroke, he decides to visit him in the hope of a reconciliation. The story takes a strange turn when the grumpy Alvin – who is too visually impaired to drive a car – decides to travel the more than 500 kilometers from Iowa to Wisconsin on his electric lawn mower. The film tells the story of the six-week journey during which Alvin has special encounters with local residents with their own stories.

Former stuntman Richard Farnsworth, 79, is a great performer as Alvin Straight, who embarks on a serene journey of life memories and humorous encounters. Farnsworth, who suffered from bone cancer, was showered with awards - including an Oscar nomination - but took his own life in 2000.
