The New Electric Ballroom
Using language and imagination, three sisters create their own reality.
In The New Electric Ballroom three sisters pour a hallucinatory flood of words over us. They are called Breda, Clara and Ada and have locked themselves up in the house where they grew up. Their current world is limited, but they tell each other countless stories about their younger years that take on almost mythological proportions. The language with which they bring their fantasies to life sounds like a piece of music full of sizzling desire and frustrated feelings.
The New Electric Ballroom is about the fear of living and loving. Using language, the three sisters create their own reality. A current theme. The comparison with what is called the 'hikikomori' in Japan is obvious: more and more young people withdraw from society and lock themselves in their rooms. They can no longer cope with the enormous pressure of the outside world. Contact takes place via social media. There they can be who they would have liked to be in real life.
Irishman Enda Walsh writes unsettling and unconventional stories about lonely people. He became known to the general public through his scenario for David Bowie's musical Lazarus. His international breakthrough was Disco Pigs, in 1996. Lynn Schutter directed this play in season 21-22 at Theater Mooi Weer.
