In 2014, the band surprised with the very well-received debut album Colfax. A follow-up was long in coming because singer Amy Boone had a serious car accident. Early 2019, the time had come and the bloodcurdlingly beautiful The Imperial saw the light of day. The album contains a relaxed mix of country soul, narrative lyrics by guitarist Willy Vlautin and the beautiful, lived-in voice of Boone.
Vlautin's lyrics are masterful, but that's to be expected from an award-winning novelist who has also made several film adaptations. Just like in his books, his songs are dominated by gloomy, dismal feelings about people whose lives always go wrong and relationships that are on the rocks or are about to do so. Wrap this in unparalleled 'late night country soul' and you can only listen breathlessly.
The Delines concerts were highlights at the Take Root and Crossing Border festivals. The album The Imperial was described by the Volkskrant as “a literary musical gem”. The new album The Sea Drift, released in February 2022, was called “glorious” in OOR and described in the Volkskrant as “a literary masterpiece in 11 chapters.”
