Chick flicks: sappy American high school movies full of drama, cheerleaders and love stories – often heteronormative and full of stereotypical gender roles. But what if we rethink this genre?
Theatre maker Thyra Jansen grew up with a love for these films. Together with two musicians, they bring the genre to the theatre: complete with school bands, break-ups and all the clichés. But as they play, the boundary between the story and reality becomes increasingly blurred. Who are you, and what role do you play in your own life?
With humor, recognizable scenes and a good dose of live music, this show gives a fresh, queer look at a genre that is often underestimated. For everyone who grew up with chick flicks and wants to dive deeper into it.
About the creator:
Thyra Jansen (hen/hun) is a theatre maker and musician. With their bass guitar, Thyra makes music theatre in which queerness and pop culture meet. Hen graduates with Taking down Clara F. Gorge, a performance that turns genres upside down and dares to ask questions. Thyra's work is playful, honest and always looking for new perspectives.
