Studio de Bakkerij en Pete Wu vieren Lunar New Year

This program is part of RCNY.

Since the beginning of the previous century, Chinese New Year has been celebrated on and around the Kruiskade. This is not surprising: the first wave of Chinese migrants arrived in Katendrecht in 1911 to work in shipping. This is where the first Chinatown in Europe emerged, with restaurants and gambling houses. Thanks in part to the Babi Pangang Foundation, the Chinese-Indonesian restaurants have become Dutch heritage.

From the beginning, the dominant but wrong image of Chinese and other East Asian Dutch people has always been stuck as a monolith of hard-working, obedient migrants. This evening is a great opportunity to show the current generations of East Asian migrants as more than that: not model minorities, but just as diverse as any other social group.
