Snesie, een portrettenserie van een gedeelde Surinaams-Chinese geschiedenis

Snesie is a collection of personal stories with images against the background and echo of an unknown part of the colonial past. The portraits provide insight into how Chinese came to Suriname in the transition from the abolition of slavery from 1853.

Snesie is Sranan Tongo, the Surinamese word for 'Chinese'.

Ashley Chin is a policy officer at the National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism and argues for the importance of personal stories in the social sciences.

This is followed by a theatrical lecture by Fresco Sam-Sin, sinologist, Manchu expert and linguist, who sketches life in China in 1858 when his ancestor Sam-Sin left for Suriname.

The program concludes with music by Frank Ong Alok, and a performance of his Keti Koti in Sranan Tongo (with subtitles)

Presentation: Bernice Tjien-a-Fat, Dutch teacher and literary scholar

Snesie is made by Carla Tjon and Lidwien van de Ven
