Sing Sing - Oscar Sunday

The title suggests that Sing Sing is a musical, but that is certainly not the case. This feel-good drama tells the inspiring, true story of a group of inmates at New York's notorious Sing Sing prison. Led by the wrongly convicted Divine G (Colman Domingo), they form a theater group. When a reluctant newcomer joins the group, they decide to stop performing existing works and create their own comedy: Breakin' the Mummy's Code.

The lead role is played by Colman Domingo, known for his Oscar nomination for Rustin, and he is one of the few professional actors in the cast. Most of the players are (former) participants of the successful Rehabilitation Through the Arts program. Thanks to the personal experiences of the screenwriters, who taught as volunteers in prisons, a realistic and compelling portrait is created of men who, through theater, can not only play someone else, but also discover themselves. These true stories make the film authentic and show the transformative power of art.
