Schuldig kind Het Nationale Theater

The performance Guilty Child is based on the acclaimed book of the same name by Ted van Lieshout. As an 11-year-old child, he had a relationship with an adult man. Guilty Child is about the influence this relationship had on his subsequent life.

15-year-old Ted prays to Maria in the hope that she can save his uncle. It is not Maria who answers, but his 59-year-old self. In the conversation that follows, it appears that the two look back on the events of their youth very differently. They question each other about guilt, complicity and curiosity. Both young and old Ted struggle with sexuality and love. With a lot of self-mockery, dedication and brutality, Ted battles with himself and social mores. Actors Bram Coopmans, Florian Myjer and Sander Plukaard each play Ted and all the characters that pass by.

About guilt and responsibility

Guilty Child tells a story about sexual development and abuse and how the story you tell yourself determines your future. Director Belle van Heerikhuizen: “For me, Guilty Child is about finding your way through complex feelings such as pleasure, guilt and shame. I think it is important to discuss this openly. And thus to be stronger in your own sexual autonomy.”

“It is a wonderful book. Moving, sometimes hard and shocking, and fortunately often funny.” – de Volkskrant about the book Guilty Child
