Rotterdamse films: Ans en het Universum en Pleasant Hel
Cinema Islemunda and International Film Festival Rotterdam are bringing IFFR classics to the big screen in the run-up to the new edition of the festival. On Friday 17 January, the short documentaries Ans en het bijzondere (Ans and the Universe) and Pleasant Hell (Pleasant Hell) will be shown. Afterwards, documentary makers Berkveldt (Noëlle Ingeveldt and Juriaan van Berkel) will join for a Q&A where the audience will also have the opportunity to ask questions. We start the evening with Pleasant Hell. This short documentary follows a young artist and his friends in Rotterdam. They wander around in a life that they experience as a pleasant hell, but find each other in music and creativity. In Pleasant Hell, filmmaker Suzanne Koopstra interweaves contemplative camera work with creative production design, in which the inner world of her characters is made visible in an inventive way. Ans en het Universe (photo) In 2022, Ans Hoornweg passed away at the age of 80. She was a woman with an extraordinary story – for others, for Ans it was the most normal thing in the world. She appeared on TV several times as a medium who could communicate with extraterrestrial beings. In Ans and the Universe she tells for the last time about her 'out-of-body experiences', her visits to other planets, but also about her media appearances and the way she was sometimes declared crazy. For Ans there is no doubt: aliens are everywhere and we are slowly moving towards a new era in which current gender norms no longer apply. Documentary makers Berkveldt (Noëlle Ingeveldt and Juriaan van Berkel) have made an honest testament of a woman with an extraordinary life story, included among the numerous dolls that Ans herself made of her extraterrestrial friends.
