Drugs are no longer the hidden problem on the margins. They are now interwoven in our daily lives, increasingly visible in our neighborhoods and our young people come into contact with them on a daily basis. The influence of drugs reaches far: from the mental health of the user to the growing criminality that undermines our society. What does this mean for us as individuals and as a community? And what does this do to our experience of meaning?

RotterdamRijker invites you to a stimulating Meaningful Drink with the theme 'The line between pleasure and danger'. In collaboration with the Albeda College we bring together two speakers who give us insight into the complex reality of the drug problem.

Psychiatrist Esther van Fenema, whose book The Mental Disk of Five will soon be published, will discuss the influence of drugs on our brains and our well-being. She investigates whether and how drugs go together with a healthy lifestyle, and what exactly makes us addicted. Esther places this in a broader context: how can we stay mentally healthy in this day and age? And why do we want to escape reality on such a large scale?

In addition, Chief Public Prosecutor Hugo Hillenaar shares his experiences and insights on the dark side of drugs in our society. What are the consequences of the normalization of drug use for our neighborhoods? How do we deal with the increasing crime, money laundering and the threat that drugs pose to social cohesion in our cities?

During this Meaningful Drink we will enter into a dialogue about questions that matter: Where is the line between pleasure and danger? Are we on the right track, or do we need to adjust our course? This is an opportunity to talk to each other, to reflect and to contemplate the impact of drugs in our lives and our society.

RotterdamRijker is organizing a series of 'Good conversations about difficult topics'. On Wednesday, November 20, 2024, this special Meaningful Drink will take place, which we organize in collaboration with Albeda College.
