Rotterdam Unchained

  • Lecture/Debate
  • Workshop

Despite everything, discrimination and hate are still a problem that poses an obstacle in the daily lives of many people. The need to discuss tensions around racial and cultural themes is very clear. For example, NRC recently revealed racism and transgressive behavior within the Rotterdam police force, and DUO's discriminatory algorithm for checking students was declared unlawful. The use of the n-word by Ronnie Flex and Anouk also came under fire, and there was an uproar about Martin Bosman's involvement in Keti Koti, as well as Johan Derksen's comments about the black MP Habtamu de Hoop.

During the discussion, participants are challenged to explore and substantiate their vision of the slavery past. They then present this vision in a creative way during the Open Mic session. The knowledge from the lecture is later returned in the closing quiz, in which participants can test their insights. In both the presentation and the quiz, there are appropriate prizes to be won as a lasting memory of this event.
