Rotterdam Cultuurstad: Post 65 Part II
View the very first sketches and the new renovation plans for the Central Library. Quist's legacy comes to life with the design drawings of the Maritime Museum. And the original models for the Schouwburgplein of West 8 form one of the endless plans for the Rotterdam city square.
OMI presents Rotterdam Cultural City: a multifaceted manifestation about the history and future of Rotterdam as an architectural-cultural city. In the 1980s, culture, tourism and recreation received a major boost with new ideas, competitions and plans. Driven by a new generation of artists, designers, architects and partly shaped by policy, Rotterdam underwent an enormous cultural transformation. Important cultural buildings from that period are now once again part of the renewal.
In Rotterdam Cultuurstad you will see the very first sketches and the new renovation plans for the Central Library. Quist's legacy comes to life with the design drawings of the Maritime Museum. And the original models for the Schouwburgplein by West 8 form one of the endless plans for the Rotterdam city square. These cultural places are used to highlight themes that still play an important role today, including the lively public debate surrounding the development of Rotterdam and the flourishing competition culture for new architecture. The exhibition thus offers a renewed view of the emergence of Rotterdam as a cultural city and at the same time shows contemporary insights into the cultural places.
Rotterdam Cultural City can be visited from 5 September to 30 November 2024. Expect work by Atelier van Berlo, BroekBakema, Obscura, Powerhouse Company, Quist Wintermans, StudioSpaceStation and West 8. Supplemented with the current visions of young architects and urban planners Arianne Fleege, Margot van Berkum and Mike van Rheenen on the Schouwburgplein. The exhibition design is entirely in the style of the cultural buildings: a walk through the city on 40m². There is also an extensive events program with a special route through Rotterdam, discussions, film and various excursions. Keep an eye on the OMI website and social media for more information and the latest updates.
