Ramps and Grids: Museum Architecture from the 80’s
In the 80s and 90s, Rotterdam rapidly developed as a cultural city: with new cultural institutions and brand-new museum buildings. During this excursion, discover the museums in a different way: not the exhibitions but the museum buildings themselves are central. The Maritime Museum, the Kunsthal and the Netherlands Architecture Institute (now: Nieuwe Instituut) share the materiality and formal language of the 80s and 90s, despite the three completely different architects. Wander over the ramps, disappear under the arcades and brave your fear of heights as you peer down over the grid floors. Iris van der Wal, architect and spatial designer, and programme maker Stefanie Korrel take you along the shapes and stories behind the buildings. The excursion ends at OMI in the exhibition Rotterdam Cultural City.
