OPENING: Radiations of War, by Yana Kononova
Radiations of War is a compelling solo exhibition by Yana Kononova in which war does not end in silence, but continues to live on in the landscape. The exhibition is accompanied by a book launch and a Q&A with the artist.
FOTODOK presents the solo exhibition Radiations of War by Ukrainian artist Yana Kononova. In her work, Kononova explores how war nestles in the landscape, even long after the violence has died down. Her photographs are not traditional war documentation, but visual encounters with an earth saturated with trauma. The series was created shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in March 2022, and shows traces of war crimes, destroyed infrastructure and the aftermath of rocket attacks.
The term “radiations” refers to the invisible, lasting effects of violence—a vibration, a memory, a disruption of space and time. Through her images, combined with poetry by Joyelle McSweeney in a new photobook, Kononova reveals how war permeates generations.
The exhibition is part of the Intergalactica project, a collaboration between FOTODOK and XYZ Books, and is the second co-production between FOTODOK Utrecht and WORM Rotterdam. Visitors are invited to engage in conversation about the human side of conflict, from the perspective of artists who experience it themselves.
