Onder het IJs - Matinee

Under the Ice is a blood-curdling and moving psychological thriller. The story is reminiscent of modern film classics such as Silence of the Lambs or American Psycho. But also of the countless 'true crime' documentaries that are among the most watched genres on all streaming services. Author Bryony Lavery immerses us in the mind of a brutal serial killer, and at the same time takes us along in the heartbreaking consequences of his actions. Why did he do what he did? And how do the relatives of a victim deal with it?

One day, ten-year-old Rhona disappears. Her mother Nancy spends years in uncertainty about what happened to her daughter. Until Ralph confesses that he kidnapped and killed the girl a long time ago. While Nancy's life falls apart for the second time, psychologist Agnetha investigates the murderer. She wants to find out what drove him to commit his crime, but in the meantime she is struggling with a great loss herself. In all this darkness, light only begins to shine again when these three get to know each other and each learns to understand themselves. Remorse, forgiveness and comfort take the place of narcissism, hatred and sorrow. While Ralph begins to realize what he has done, Nancy and Agnetha find the strength to live their meaningless existence meaningfully.

In her direction of this emotional story, Eva Lemaire shows the human ability to find comfort in inconsolable grief.

British Bryony Lavery wrote 'Frozen' in 1998 and reworked it in 2018. The play was performed by the National Theatre, among others, before making a splash on Broadway. The Independent added it to its list of '40 best plays ever written'.
