Oded Tzur Quartet

Thoughtful but sure, that's the sound of Oded Tzur's saxophone. The Israeli-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader, now living in New York, embraces music as an art, but also as a form of prayer. This approach has resulted in an oeuvre that has reached millions of listeners. On previous records he already searched for a universal language, but on his second ECM album Isabela, which was released in 2022, he has clearly found the key.
Tzur integrates Indian music into his jazz playing, with a velvety touch on the tenor saxophone that reminds one of John Coltrane. He developed his musical knowledge partly in Rotterdam, at the Codarts conservatory. His playing also occasionally reveals rawer sides. Tzur rediscovered the delta blues of musicians such as Son House and Howlin' Wolf, and that also left its mark in the elongated notes that follow the structures of age-old Indian ragas.
He is coming to LantarenVenster for the third time. This time with the music from his latest project My Prophet, which was released in June 2024 by ECM Records.
