Nickel Boys

The story of the powerful friendship between two young African-American men who together endure the horrific trials of a Florida reform school.

Special and one-time screening, the International Day for the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination. Nickel Boys, directed and co-written by RaMell Ross, tells the story of the powerful friendship between two young African-American men in the 1960s, who together endure the horrific trials of a reformatory school in Florida. The film follows Elwood Curtis (played by Ethan Herisse), a brilliant teenager who dreams of a better future, inspired by Martin Luther King. But a miscarriage of justice lands him in the hell of Nickel Academy, a school full of violence, racism and abuse of power. There he meets Turner (Brandon Wilson), another young inmate who, unlike him, no longer believes in justice. Their friendship and their different beliefs will determine their survival in this ruthless place. Nickel Boys is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Colson Whitehead and nominated for the Oscar Best Picture 2025. In the Netherlands, the book was published as De Jongens van Nickel. This performance was created in collaboration with Dutch cinemas and film houses (organized in the Dutch Film Theatre Consultation) and is organized as a means in the fight against racism and discrimination at the request of the National Coordinator against Discrimination and Racism, Rabin S. Baldewsingh. With thanks to Amazon MGM Studios.
