Nhà mới - Vietnamezen in Nederland
The title of this project is the Vietnamese translation for 'New (t)home'. We present the story of the Vietnamese community in Rotterdam and in the Netherlands, their new home. In the form of an audiovisual exhibition at collaboration partner Verhalenhuis Belvédère.
In the multicultural melting pot that is Rotterdam, it is important to show where the people come from and what the history of all these people is. Nhà mới shows the Vietnamese perspective. The why and how they ended up here is presented to you with this exhibition. You can see what the reality is of the refugees/Vietnamese. You also see how hardworking, resilient and valuable the Vietnamese are to society.
There is a stigma among the first generation that talking about 'the past' does not bring anything good and therefore much is still kept under wraps. However, the time is ripe. The first generation has often reached retirement age and stories can still be told by themselves. The second and third generations are curious about their roots. A spirit of the times: society-wide there is a movement of people with a migration background and their curiosity about the diaspora and the pride that goes with it.
With a mural that functions as a red line as an eye-catcher, we tell you the context of the Vietnamese war, the flight by boat, the arrival in the Netherlands and the mental care that was provided, the challenges of settling in the Netherlands. Of course, pride is also discussed: the now well-known Vietnamese cuisine, the Vietnamese traditions and customs. Finally, we show where the Vietnamese community, including the second and third generation, stands now.
All dates
From 19 April to 18 July
