Mouse on the Keys
Japanese band Mouse on the Keys mixes jazz, post-rock and minimalism with intense drums and piano playing, creating a dynamic sound and visually impressive live shows.
Mouse on the Keys is an instrumental band from Tokyo, Japan, known for their unique blend of post-rock, jazz, and minimalist classical music since their formation in 2006. The band consists of two pianists/keyboardists - Daisuke Niitome and Takumi Shiroeda - and drummer Akira Kawasaki. This line-up defines Mouse on the Keys' unique sound and energetic playing style. Unlike traditional rock bands, they do not use guitars, but let pianos and synthesizers form the melodic and rhythmic core, supported by dynamic, often polyrhythmic drums. Their music is a fusion of jazz improvisation, post-rock-like structures, and contemporary classical influences. Live, they are known for their intense, almost orchestral performances, in which complex rhythms and harmonies come together in an explosive sound. Their visual style also plays a major role, with sleek, futuristic video projections enhancing the experience. In November 2024, Mouse on the Keys released their fourth studio album, titled midnight. Marking their first major release since 2018’s Tres, this album introduces new band member Shiroeda Takumi, a collaboration with British producer Loraine James, and contributions from violinist Shuntaro Tsuneta and cellist Seigen Tokuzawa. These collaborations add new colors to the band’s signature sound. The album is dark, minimalistic, and abstract, with an emphasis on rhythm and electronic elements. Line-up: Daisuke Niitome - piano/keyboards Takumi Shiroeda - piano/keyboards Akira Kawasaki - drums
