Memorias De Un Cuerpo Que Arde - Expat Cinema Rotterdam

A powerful portrait of womanhood, where three women in their seventies reflect on their lives, intertwining memories, secrets, and desires in a poetic narrative.

Memorias De Un Cuerpo Que Arde is a powerful portrait of womanhood that explores various facets of being a woman.

Three women in their seventies recount the evolution of their sexual and emotional lives, with a single actress representing them at every stage of their journey on screen. Having grown up in a repressive era in Costa Rica, where sexuality was a taboo subject, 68-year-old Ana, 69-year-old Patricia, and 71-year-old Mayela shaped their understanding of what it means to be a woman based on unspoken rules and societal expectations.

Looking back on their lives, the three women now dare to speak openly about their experiences for the first time. Their memories, secrets, and desires are poetically intertwined. As the women narrate their stories off-screen, they breathe life into the body of another woman of their generation, who embodies their experiences on the big screen.

Beyond the moving stories, director Antonella Sudasassi Furniss elevates the film with her extraordinary artistic approach. The camera seamlessly transitions between different eras, from present to past, youth to old age, and moments of sorrow to times of joy, creating a visually stunning and emotionally resonant narrative.
