Memoir of a Snail - Oscar Sunday

An enchanting and delightful film about the bittersweet life of Grace Pudel, a collector of snails, romance stories and guinea pigs. Nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

An enchanting and delightful film about the bittersweet life of Grace Pudel, a collector of snails, romance stories and guinea pigs. A visually stunning stop-motion film by Adam Elliot, who previously won an Oscar for his animated short Harvie Krumpet.

Memoir of a Snail follows Grace Pudel, an introverted Canberra woman who has retreated into her shell since the death of her father and the separation from her twin brother Gilbert. As Grace tells her story to her favourite pet snail Sylvia, a beautiful, tragicomic universe unfolds filled with warmth, eccentric characters, melancholy and visual humour.

Grace and her brother are placed with foster families, each on a different side of the country. The tragedy in the lives of these lovingly shaped main characters in clay piles up particularly high. But as only Elliot can, he magically combines the misery with cheeky humor to create a heartwarming, heartbreaking and hilarious film. A star role in it is played by Pinky, Grace's flamboyant friend and pillar of support. She is in her eighties and has a whole life of adventures etched into the wrinkles of her face: from table tennis with Fidel Castro to a rendezvous with John Denver in a helicopter.
