Make lucky hanging ornaments for the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu jie) Duanwu jie
A traditional festival full of history, dragon boat racing and delicious rice dumplings. In the Atelier, colorful lucky charms are made in honor of this special day.
This festival dates back to the 4th century BC, when the loyal minister Qu Yuan threw himself into the river out of grief. Villagers tried to save him with boats and drums, and threw rice into the water to honor his soul. Today, it is commemorated with dragon boat races and the making of zongzi , rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. The tradition is continued at the Atelier by making good-luck pendants in the shape of zongzi , decorated with brightly colored threads as a symbol of prosperity and good fortune.
