Ma’MaQueen Esmée Van Loon
In her creative process, Esmée van Loon does not shy away from sensitive subjects. Vulnerable and open, Venus tells what it is like to live in a society in which everyone still thinks and lives in boxes. The film thus portrays the fears and desires of a non-binary trans feminine person.
Ma'MaQueen was selected for the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) and Shortcutz Amsterdam in 2018, it won best film at the Rotterdam Open Doek in 2017. In 2019, the documentary was broadcast by 2DOC.
Esmée van Loon (1996) is a documentary maker and researcher from Rotterdam. Looking beyond the surface, observation, involvement and humanity are important parts of her process and craftsmanship. She reflects on stories that often revolve around socially relevant themes that are close to her.
