Luci

A search for the memory and legacy of the great-great-grandfather of performer and co-director Mathieu Wijdeven: the Surinamese artist GGT Rustwijk (1862-1914).

Who was known by the pseudonym Luci. Rustwijk lived in Suriname shortly after slavery as a theatre maker and performer, multidisciplinary artist, man of colour and early critic of the Dutch colonial regime - before eventually being forgotten. Using historical locations, site-specific performances, text, interviews and reinvented archive material, we search for Rustwijk's 'light' and what remains of it in contemporary Suriname.
