In this archive documentary, director Mathieu Wijdeven examines the legacy of his great-great-grandfather, Surinamese artist GGT Rustwijk, who was an early critic of the colonial regime.

The great-great-grandfather of director Mathieu Wijdeven is the Surinamese artist GGT Rustwijk (1862-1914). In his work he was an early critic of the colonial regime. How is he remembered in contemporary Suriname?

In this archival documentary, the debut of Mathieu Wijdeven, the search for the memory and legacy of his great-great-grandfather is highlighted. Rustwijk was an early critic of the Dutch colonial regime and a versatile artist, but eventually fell into oblivion. The film explores his 'light' through historical locations, site-specific performances, interviews and reinvented archival material, asking what of his influence can still be found in Suriname today.

Wijdeven's personal quest makes it extra special, and we are therefore pleased that we can show this film by a local maker.
