The painters of French Romanticism, to which Scheffer (1795-1858) belonged, used their brushes as weapons. Romantic ideals and ideas such as freedom, equality and expression found their way into art. It was a time of great political unrest, but also of cultural flourishing, with Paris as a hotbed and breeding ground.
