King Lear Dood Paard
King Lear divides his kingdom among his daughters, with the two eldest making statements of praise while the youngest refuses. Lear disinherits her out of anger. How does the older generation leave society for its children?
King Lear is in the winter of his life and decides to split up his kingdom and divide it among his daughters. The size of the inheritance depends on the love that the daughters show to their father. The two eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, flatter Lear and exhaust themselves in declarations of love. The youngest, Cordelia, the apple of his eye, refuses to participate in this charade and believes that her love speaks for itself. Lear then becomes enraged, disinherits her and banishes her to France.
At a time when old rulers, CEOs, presidents and dictators want to maintain and strengthen their grip on the world, Dood Paard sheds new light on King Lear with an anti-patriarchal view. How does the older generation leave society for its children? Why is it so difficult to let go of control over a world they no longer have to live in? What is true, what is fake? What is madness, what is wisdom? Who can really be trusted?
King Lear is one of Shakespeare's most complex plays with many characters and plot lines. Dood Paard translates the original itself and makes a very current and razor-sharp adaptation.
