Kika Sprangers Large Ensemble

Saxophonist and composer Kika Sprangers came, saw and conquered in 2019. With her debut album Human Traits she immediately showed what she has to offer. Sprangers was nominated for an Edison Award and won the Rogier van Otterloo Award in 2021. She works with various line-ups and likes to be inspired by portrait photographers and writers. Sometimes with a vocalist, then again with a large ensemble.

In this project, the Kika Sprangers Large Ensemble plays the new music of (In)finity. In chamber jazz formation, she brings the perfect blend of vocals with saxophone, bass clarinet, flute, trumpet and horn with room for improvisation and individual timbre. (In)finity will be released at the end of 2024 on the DOX Records label. The album was recorded at the end of Kika's new makers trajectory in TivoliVredenburg in January 2023.

Her artistic quest of the project (In)finity revolves around what makes us human. Kika translates the theme of infinity both literally in the form of musical circular loops, expansive sounds and vast collective improvisations, as abstractly. The music translates the human perspective on (the illusion of) infinity.

In the current composition of the Large Ensemble, Kika is looking even more for the player behind the instrument. She proudly presents this band with some of the most outspoken soloists of the Dutch jazz scene who represent the unique and strong sound of the young generation. Kika excels in her compositions for this chamber jazz line-up with the perfect blend of vocals with wind instruments and at the same time gives space for the momentum in which the musicians flourish in improvisations.
