Jongensuren Toneelschuur Producties
Welcome to the world of the Dutch sixties writer Andreas Burnier, who has fallen into oblivion despite her progressive, still hyper-current work on identity and sexuality. Burnier wrote about those topics in a way that sounds familiar now, but was considered very controversial at the time – and had a major impact. Jongensuren, the theater adaptation of Burnier's work, exudes the spirit of the times, the double standards of the post-war period, and the desire for freedom of a young woman in a world where 'deviations' are frowned upon.
In Jongensuren, a new theater text by Koen Verheijden based on Burnier's novels, we see four actors, four women on the floor, who alternately play Andreas Burnier and the characters she created. It is an investigative, almost documentary performance, made by someone who has delved deeply into the life and work of one of the Netherlands' greatest queer writers. Jongensuren is a theatrical ode to Andreas Burnier, also in form and style; associative, from different perspectives and with a lot of (sometimes wry) humor.
Koen Verheijden: “I find it bizarre that Andreas Burnier, who had such a great influence on Dutch literature, is still so little known today. With this performance I want to give her work the attention it deserves again. And theater is the ideal means to give historical queer characters a stage.”
