Jazz in Crooswijk - Tabea Koloska Sextet

Tabea Koloska and her Sextet bring together musical exploration, evocative lyricism and improvisation. The ensemble was formed in 2021 at the Aaron Copland School of Music - Queens College (NYC), with fellow students who were drawn to Tabea's original compositions. After her return to the Netherlands in 2023, Tabea re-formed the Sextet with a new group of young, promising musicians: Femke Mooren (alto saxophone), Matteo Paggi (trombone), Miran Noh (piano), Jurriaan de Kok (double bass) and Martin Hafizi (drums).

The Sextet’s music reflects Tabea’s love for the balance between vulnerability and strength. Her compositions invite listeners on a journey where desire and hope intertwine, creating an emotional resonance that feels both intimate and grand. The lyrics, in German, Dutch, English and Japanese, are open to personal interpretation, with Tabea’s voice often acting as an additional instrument that seamlessly blends with the horns. Improvisation is at the heart of their performances, infusing each show with spontaneity and vitality.

The Sextet’s upcoming album, Between Cultures, reflects Tabea’s openness to new ideas and perspectives. The music offers a companion for turbulent times, inviting listeners to connect deeply with themselves and the world around them. Tabea and her Sextet continue to push boundaries by exploring new ways of playing together and surprising their audiences with fresh interpretations and unexpected moments of wild beauty.
