Jake Xerxes Fussell

North Carolina native Jake Xerxes Fussell is a masterful interpreter of folk. He is often mentioned in the same breath as guitar greats such as William Tyler and Ryley Walker. Fussell dedicates his music to breathing new life into forgotten folk songs, making them glow again. With his lived-in voice, he creates new connections between past and present. In addition to the historical richness of his work, his songs are breathtakingly beautiful. Among his most loyal admirers are Jeff Tweedy, Will Oldham and Bill Callahan. On his latest album When I'm Called - released on the renowned Fat Possum label in June 2024 - Fussell returns to his roots. The album is a reflection on transience and the unexpected twists and turns of life. On this record he collaborated with Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station), Joe Westerlund (Bon Iver, California) and Blake Mills, who each contributed their own timbre to the album's layering. Fussell is a true folksinger: a collector of melodies, lyrics and ideas from distant and diverse traditions, always searching for what unites us as humans.
