Invisible Beauty

Long before Naomi Campbell walked the runway, Bethann Hardison was a famous model fighting for diversity in the fashion industry. She quickly transitioned to a career behind the scenes, working as an editor at Italian Vogue, producing TV shows, and founding her own modeling agency—the first black woman to do so.

Hardison does everything on her own terms and she also co-directed this documentary about her life, in which she takes stock of her own legacy. Co-director Frédéric Tcheng previously made a name for himself with films about fashion designers, such as Dior and I (2014). Together they provide an overview of Hardison's career, a glimpse into the fashion world itself and how the two influence each other. All of this is illustrated with archive material, swinging music from the past and commentary by Hardison, who is still as tough as ever.
