IFFR x Erasmus: How to Have Sex with consent
In the run-up to the largest film festival in the Netherlands at the end of January, we would like to put the spotlight on the film How to have Sex by Molly Manning Walker from the 2024 edition. Afterwards, we will talk to experts from the Erasmus Love Lab about: What is good sex? And how do you guard your boundaries?
Dr. Samira van Bohemen, head of the Erasmus Love Lab, will give a short introduction to the film How to Have Sex, the first feature film by British Molly Manning Walker. After that, we will talk with a panel of Erasmus Love Lab experts led by Lotte Mikkers about: What is good sex? What do young people think about this? Is a Hot Girl Summer a good time for sexual experimentation and for discovering your (sexual) identity? Or does it also put pressure on young people to cross their boundaries?
The panel will consist of:
Dr. Samira van Bohemen, associate professor of cultural sociology at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB) and head of the Erasmus Love Lab. Her research focuses on the social organization of sexual desire and sexual action
Dr. Linda Dekker, assistant professor of clinical psychology (ESSB). Her research focuses on psychosexual functioning and individuals with autism spectrum disorder.
Mirthe Verbeek, researcher (ESSB) with expertise in perpetration and preventing inappropriate behaviour.
The panel will be chaired by Lotte Mikkers, researcher (ESSB) in the field of sexual development and youth health.
About How to Have Sex:
Best Holiday. Ever! The final exams are over and to celebrate, Tara and her two best friends are going on holiday to Crete. Drinking, dancing and flirting, the girls move from club to pool party in search of adventure and unforgettable nights, towards freedom. The pressure to have sex is high, especially for Tara who is the only one of the group who has no experience yet. But what should be the best holiday of their lives changes when Tara's boundaries are carelessly crossed. How To Have Sex is a film about the path to adulthood and the vulnerability of young people when they are confronted with transgressive behaviour and peer pressure. With her energetic, powerful and confrontational film debut, British director Molly Manning Walker shows how important the conversation about consent still is.
