Hokwerda's kind

Hokwerda's child is based on the novel of the same name by Oek de Jong.

Lin (33) is a successful swimmer who, after her competitive swimming career, is now seeking the challenge in open water. She has trained for years for the arduous crossing of the Channel in record time. The idea that swimmers sometimes disappear during this journey does not deter her, but rather attracts her. As a child, she repeatedly asked her father to throw her over the reeds in the canal, until one day she almost drowned. A few weeks before her crossing, she meets Henri (38), an underwater welder who, like her, thrives in dangerous situations. Together they plunge into an intense love affair in which they challenge each other to great heights, but also draw each other ever deeper into the darkness.

The novel Hokwerda's kind was published in 2002 and became a success with 65,000 copies sold. The book was nominated for the Golden Owl Literature Prize and the Libris Literature Prize, and translated into French, German and Danish. Filmmaker Boudewijn Koole, known for Kauwboy, Beyond Sleep and Verdwijnen, brings this story to the big screen in a special way.
