On May 14 at exactly 1:27 PM, there will be 2 minutes of silence in Rotterdam. We commemorate that our city was bombed 85 years ago.
On May 14, 1940, from 13:27, the bombs fell on the heart of the city and caused a huge fire. Almost 900 people were killed. 80,000 Rotterdammers lost their homes.
What had been built up over centuries was destroyed in fifteen minutes. A dramatic turning point for our city and our country: the Netherlands capitulated. Every year, Rotterdam commemorates this moment when the city lost its heart.
In the afternoon at 13:00 the central commemoration will take place at Plein 1940. Everyone is welcome to attend this commemoration ceremony.
