Henk Chabot - menselijkheid en vrijheid
Paintings and drawings 1940-1945
How did Chabot see his time? The exhibition Humanity and Freedom shows paintings of refugees, people in hiding and the persecuted that Chabot made during the Second World War in his small studio on the Rotte. As he himself said, he wanted to penetrate 'the essence' of man when painting his figures, something he recognised in the work of his great example Rembrandt. He wrote about this: '... Rembrandt will still be new and in time in a thousand years. Perhaps people will then know the concept of humanity and freedom better than they do now, which Rembrandt possessed to a high degree.'
In addition to paintings from the core collection of the Chabot Museum, previously unseen works from private collections will also be shown. The exhibition will be on view from 11 February 2025 and is partly taking place on the occasion of 80 years of liberation.
