HARDKOOR Naomi Velissariou
A single mother and artist retreats a year before her fortieth birthday. During her burnout she sees this as a crisis of the entire system, physically, mentally and spiritually. She fights against the pressure of time, conformity and self-criticism.
Through a personal war of attrition in language, music and movement, she makes her way to a shameless existence, in which the never-ending search for confirmation makes way for radical self-love and a not-so-boring balance.
The harsh language of Naomi Velissariou, who, in a fluent combination of English and Dutch, wants to shatter suffocating images of humanity, is mixed in HARDKOOR with the mind fucking sound design of Joost Maaskant and Frank Wienk (Binkbeats). Velissariou previously formed the duo PERMANENT DESTRUCTION with Maaskant. Producer Frank Wienk translates their sound in HARDKOOR into a composition that explores the boundaries between acoustic and electronic music. That composition is performed by drummer Jens Bouttery and the Netherlands Chamber Choir (NKK). The whole thing takes place in a setting that designer Boris Acket describes as a “brutalist techno temple”: a modular installation of light and sound technology, with a special role for the voices of the choir. The costumes consist of high fashion loungewear, designed by MAISON the FAUX.

HARDKOOR is a co-production between Theater Utrecht and the Nederlands Kamerkoor.
