Hamlet Theater Rotterdam: Erik Whien
Young Hamlet mourns his father, but finds no space in his surroundings. His mother quickly remarries for political reasons, which worsens his inner struggle. Repressed grief leads to anger and self-destruction.
After acclaimed performances such as Revolutionary Road and Verdriet is het ding met veren, director Erik Whien and actor Jacob Derwig join forces again for a play about mourning, loss and resilience. The Shakespeare classic Hamlet is adapted into universal and personal theatre, played by Hannah Hoekstra, Jacob Derwig and Roman Derwig. The latter two are also father and son in real life. This Hamlet thus also becomes a theatrical hall of mirrors: a play within a play that explores complex themes such as education, unconditionality and the foundations of mutual trust through the story of the Danish prince.
