Costume drama near Venice in which five musically talented girls in an orphanage fight against the patriarchal system of the 18th century.

It is 1800 and the Sant'Ignazio Instituto for girls is preparing for a visit from Pope Pius VII. Bandmaster Perlina is determined to compose a new piece of music, but he is struggling with a serious creative block and inspiration is lacking. Meanwhile, four talented girls from the orchestra, along with the maid Teresa, decide to secretly create their own music. Their inspiration is sparked by the discovery of a hidden pianoforte within the walls of the institute. While Perlina refuses to hear of their experiments and desperately tries to get his own piece on paper, the day of the papal visit is fast approaching and he has not yet composed a single note.
