Gaye Su Akyol, the Turkish Queen of Rock, is coming back to GROUNDS on the 10th of May to bring us peace and love from Istanbul. On her latest 2022 album “Anadolu Ejderi” (Anatolian Dragon), she takes her irresistibly retro-futuristic Turkish psychedelia to a new, more personal level.
During the pandemic, Gaye Su Akyol was forced to take a break from touring. She used her time well and wrote more than 100(!) songs. Out of this she crafted an irresistible album that combines ‘classic’ Turkish psych melodies with Anatolian folk, pop, African and Middle Eastern sounds, soul, disco and rock. The result is extremely catchy and makes her unique voice stand out even more. The album breathes fire, takes artistic risks, and symbolizes the awakening of a mythological dragon as resistance to pure evil.
Her lyrics are heavily influenced by Turkey’s history and current challenges. She paints a poignant picture of the political and economic problems and calls for collective action. “Anadolu Ejderi” represents Gaye Su Akyol’s most liberating and authentic album to date, fusing various genres and musical influences into an exciting, unique and compelling adventure. So get your one way ticket and join us on this mesmerizing trip to her rocking galaxy.
