I am new
The five-part youth documentary series I am new follows children who have fled their own country (Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria) and are new in the Netherlands. Each film follows a different child.
We see Ukrainian Ivan, who likes to play guitar and take photos. We also see football fanatic Karim, who misses his friend from Syria. Syrian Nay likes to make dance tiktoks in her living room and dreams of a dance career in K-pop. And ambitious Zenat plays the piano and wants to become a writer.
The fifth film ends in a video clip where they make a song together called I am new with the famous hip hop artist Jay-Way. Are the people portrayed in I am new very different? Or are they also just children of 13 and 14 years old? With friends and classmates, with their own dreams and passions, such as football, reading, drawing, writing stories or K-pop…
Stero
Speaking Kiswahili on school grounds is against the language policy. For Bruce Koech, this oppressive British-Western education system goes against his rebellious spirit. With the heart of a warrior and an imaginary sensei at his side, Bruce tries to defy this unjust rule by transforming into Stero, a tough hero who lives up to his true self and wild spirit. Directed by Tevin Kimathi and Millan Tarus, Stero is a subtle and charming reflection on the power of a child’s imagination.
